Thematic workshops for kids – Wood and climate change

Together with other InnoRenew CoE researchers we conducted thematic workshops for school kids in cooperation with SPIRIT Slovenia. Primary school students, age 11 to 13, learnt about wood use, climate change and the cross section of these two topics. In 6 sessions, which took place in autumn of 2024, either at InnoRenew or at the schools themselves, we reached approximately 500 children.

We actively engaged students in the workshop, encouraging them to learn about sustainable development and climate change as well as to identify and different properties of wood, such as density, hardness, flexibility, toughness, and explain how these properties influence the choice of wood for a particular use.

In the workshops, we emphasized the importance of using natural renewable resources and explain to students the importance of using wood as a strategy to reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (carbon sink).

Students also learnt about the versatility and beauty of working with wood and the variety of professions that are linked to it.
